Zurich promotes Bates

Zurich Financial Services Australia has promoted Hilary Bates to chief operating officer for its life and investments arms. In her new role, Bates will lead operations, customer service, underwriting, and claims services across Australia.

Bates was previously the chief claims officer, a role she held for nearly five years. She previously held strategy and operational roles with QBE and was the VP of claims for US-based CAMICO Mutual Insurance Company.

Bates started her career as a paralegal and legal researcher with several firms before becoming a solicitor with Sparke Helmore.

In a statement, a spokesperson for the organisation said, "With close to 20 years working in the insurance industry, Hilary is passionate about business transformation and delivering on the promise to Zurich's customers."

Bates started in her new role earlier this month, replacing Gavin Pearce who retired following more than 40 years in financial services.
