Former CEO and MD of IAG, Michael Hawker, is set to retire from the Macquarie board.

It will not be a long rest, however, as he's set to join the Westpac board in November, replacing Alison Deans, who announced her decision to retire from the board at the conclusion of Westpac's 2020 annual general meeting in December.

Hawker was the CEO of IAG from 2001 - 2008 and held senior positions at Westpac and Citibank. Since leaving the executive workforce, Hawker has held a variety of directorships including with The George Institute for Global Health, Bupa, and the Rugby World Cup.

"The Board would like to thank Michael for his important contribution and commitment to Macquarie over the past decade," said Macquarie Group chair Peter Warne. "Michael has been generous with his time and insights and I have personally valued his counsel a great deal.

"We wish him well in his continued contributions to the important topics of corporate culture and governance in the coming years."

In announcing his appointment to the Westpac board, chair John McFarlane said, "We are delighted to welcome Mike to the Board and will benefit greatly from his board experience and deep knowledge of financial services."
