Victoria Funds Management Corporation chair James MacKenzie will step down from the role next month having chaired the board for eight years.

Lisa Gay, the current deputy chair and former general counsel for Goldman Sachs JBWere, will fill in on an interim basis.

The quasi-sovereign wealth fund executive team thanked MacKenzie for his "immense" contribution to VFMC.

"James has been instrumental in the establishment and oversight of the centralised investment model for the State of Victoria implemented by VFMC," the fund said.

"VFMC has been extremely fortunate to have benefited from James' extensive commercial understanding and governance experience."

In addition to VFMC, MacKenzie also chairs Slater and Gordon Lawyers and the Suburban Rail Loop Authority.

Also, he is a trustee of the Melbourne Cricket Ground Trust.

For her part Gay - who sits on the board of Computershare - previously chaired ASIC's Markets Disciplinary Panel.

This is the second board resignation in as many months.

In June,  Elana Rubin retired from the VFMC board following her appointment to the Reserve Bank of Australia board.
