Nanuk Asset Management has added a portfolio manager to an investment team focused on opportunities arising from the long-term trends associated with environmental sustainability.

With over 32 years of experience as an equities analyst and portfolio manager, John Lobb arrives from Insync Funds Management where he was a global equities portfolio manager.

Previously, he also held senior investment positions at Orion Asset Management, Credit Suisse Global Asset Management, and Citigroup Global Asset Management.

Earlier, he worked with Bankers Trust Australia between 1989 and 1992.

At Nanuk, Lobb joins investment chief and Olympic gold medallistTom King, London-based portfolio manager Binya Even, along with local portfolio managers Jane Henderson, Tristan Patience, Peter Wilmshurst and former Platinum Asset Management executive Marie Miyashiro.

"Lobb's focus on identifying quality, undervalued businesses benefitting from structural tailwinds is very well aligned with our approach," said King.

"He is well known to us having previously worked with Tristan and Nanuk director Tim Ryan."

King emphasised that Lobb's specialty at Insync included many of the secular trends that underpin Nanuk's investment strategy such as low-emission energy, workplace automation, encompassing machine learning and artificial intelligence.

"His philosophy is to identify self-funding companies already exceeding their cost of capital, with an ability to continue to deliver above-average growth in earnings per share independently of global GDP growth due to enduring secular trends".

The investment chief said Lobb's appointment will broaden the firm's coverage of companies with above-average growth rates and expand its capacity to research the expanding number of opportunities related to the emerging sustainability revolution.

"It is an exciting time for sustainably themed investment, with technologies such as electric vehicles, renewable energy and the Internet of Things moving from infancy to maturity and new opportunities emerging in areas such as hydrogen, carbon capture and storage and artificial intelligence."

"Nanuk recognises that environmental challenges present both opportunities and risks for investments. The recent breaking of global temperature records, with the average global temperature reaching 17C this month, surpassing the previous record of 16.9C set in August 2016, serves as a clear reminder of the likelihood of further government support for more sustainable technology as we move through this decade.

The active asset manager, established in 2009,  bets on change and innovation by investing in listed companies associated with the broad themes of clean energy, energy efficiency, industrial efficiency, waste management, pollution control, food and agriculture, advanced and sustainable materials, water, and healthcare technology.
