Former AMP chair Simon McKeon AO has been named a director to the NAB board, subject to regulatory approval, effective 3 February 2020.

NAB chair Philip Chronican said he and the board were delighted that McKeon has joined the organisation, and that they "look forward to the insights that he will bring from a range of sectors, including financial services, the law, government, education and charities."

McKeon said that large financial services organisation provide financial stability and essential services to consumers and business while employing tens of thousands of Australians. "In recent years these organisations including NAB have been subjected to significant and well-founded criticism while also becoming increasingly complicated and challenging entities to run.

"Joining NAB as a director gives me an opportunity to assist the improvement process from the inside while also supporting the bank's ambitions at a time of seriously enhanced competition."

In addition to directorships on the boards of Rio Tinto and Spotless Group, McKeon is the chancellor of Monash University. He was named the 2011 Australian of the Year and in 2012 named an Officer of the Order of Australia.

McKeon has experience as a solicitor before joining Macquarie Group where he had a 30-year career that culminated with the executive chairmanship. He's also served on the boards of MYOB and AMP, and was the chair of the CSIRO.
