Janus Henderson has appointed Ali Dibadj as its new chief executive.

He will succeed Dick Weil, who will retire after 12 years in the top job.

Dibadj joins from Alliance Bernstein where he most recently served as chief financial officer and head of strategy.

During his 16 years with Alliance Bernstein, he worked in several roles, including as portfolio manager in the equities business.

Earlier, Dibadj spent almost a decade in management consulting, including with McKinsey & Company and Mercer.

Roger Thompson, the firm's chief financial officer, has been appointed as interim chief executive until Dibadj arrives in June.

Weil will remain as an adviser until Dibadj takes up his new post.

"We are pleased to appoint Ali Dibadj as the company's next CEO," said the firm's chairman Richard Gillingwater. "As part of our CEO transition planning, we conducted an extensive search to identify an executive who  understands our business and has the necessary strategic expertise to help drive the firm's next phase of growth."

Gillingwater thanked Weil for his leadership over the years and wished him all the best in his retirement.

Dibadj added: "I am delighted to join Janus Henderson and look forward to having the opportunity to lead such a talented group of professionals at an important time for the company and the industry."

As chief executive, Dibadj will join the board, the firm said in a release to the Australian Stock Exchange.
