UniSuper has appointed Peter Chun as its new chief executive officer.

Chun replaces Kevin O'Sullivan, who announced his resignation in February.

"Peter has worked across all aspects of the superannuation sector and brings immense qualifications, experience and insight to the role," said UniSuper chair Ian Martin. "We look forward to welcoming him to the business later in the year."

Chun has more than 30 years of experience in financial services, most recently as Aware Super's group executive for member growth. He previously spent a dozen years with Colonial First State in distribution and products roles including general manager of distribution. He also held roles with Macquarie Bank, Credit Suisse, BT Financial Group, and ANZ.

"UniSuper represents one of the most respected, best performing Funds in the sector," said Chun. "I am extremely excited to be able to lead such a dynamic and successful team and look forward to working closely with the Board, Kevin and the Executive team as I take on the role later this year.

"This is an exciting time for UniSuper and its members. The superannuation sector is changing rapidly, and it is important that Funds continue to evolve and adapt."

UniSuper recently announced that it would become a public offer fund, open to members from all walks of life. Chun said that this change will not affect the fund's relationship with its existing higher education industry membership. "The Fund has a uniquely deep relationship with its members; particularly in the higher education sector and UniSuper's core purpose - to deliver greater retirement outcomes for members - will continue unchanged. I am motivated and committed to making impactful change to retirement outcomes for Australians and this role furthers that opportunity for me professionally and personally."

Aware Super chief executive Deanne Stewart thanked Chun for his contributions. "We wish him every success in his new role when he takes the reins later this year.

"In just the past two years, Peter's team has launched the Aware Super brand and delivered an award-winning app that has put super right into the hands of our million-plus members. He's leaving a very strong and capable team to carry on this important work for us."

Aware is currently recruiting for a new group executive for member growth. In the interim, senior executive and chief of staff Debra Mika will fill the role.

Chun will join UniSuper on 6 September.
