REBECCA POPE

From starting out as a marketing manager to her most recent appointment as head of intermediary, Rebecca Pope has been climbing her way up the Vanguard ladder since 2009 - a trajectory that aligns with the firm's philosophy that employees join for a career, not just a job. She tells Industry Moves about her role with the firm and what initially drew her to the industry, as well as sharing her greatest lessons, some sound advice, and where she sees herself in 10 years.

What initially attracted you towards a career in finance?

I had returned from London after working with technology firms for several years and was considering options for the next stage of my career. A family member who was a financial adviser suggested I consider the financial advice industry and funds management. He talked about how dynamic and interesting the industry was and that it is ultimately about helping people achieve their goals. I subsequently took a marketing role in funds management and haven't looked back!

Can you tell us what your role entails?

My role is focused on setting the strategic direction of our intermediary business and leading the sales team to ensure we meet the needs of our clients

"Rebecca leads our intermediary sales team and is an important member of the Distribution Executive Team. She is a strong strategic thinker and drives positive change in our organisation. We are very fortunate to have a leader like Rebecca at Vanguard as she has formed an excellent team that are committed to delivering value to our clients." - Matthew Lumsden, Head of Distribution

What's the greatest lesson that you've taken away from your time with this organisation so far?

That having a strong and clear purpose and mission can have an incredible impact on employees and clients.

Where do you see yourself in the next ten years?

One of the greatest things about working for Vanguard is our philosophy on joining for a career, not just a job. This culture creates enormous opportunity to work in different parts of the business and I have been fortunate to hold a variety of roles since joining Vanguard. While I'm not sure where I will be in 10 years' time, what is important to me is that I continue to learn, be challenged and have a positive impact.

Do you have an industry mentor or someone that has influenced your career in some way? If so, who?

I've been fortunate to have several mentors and sponsors both formerly and informally throughout my career. They have all greatly influenced my career by encouraging me to take on ambitious challenges and roles, and encouraging me to believe in myself and the value I bring to the business.

In your opinion, what are the main qualities that make for an effective leader?

Being authentic, vulnerable and creating a trusted and inclusive environment where all voices are heard and respected. I'm also a very strong advocate of leading by example, lead how you like to be led and roll up your sleeves when all hands on deck are needed.

"Rebecca brings diverse expertise to her role leading the intermediary sales team, drawing on leadership experience across a range of business divisions at Vanguard. She fosters collaboration between teams, and has an unwavering focus on driving the best outcomes for our clients. With a positive outlook and a great work ethic, Rebecca is well respected amongst her colleagues." - Evan Reedman, Head of Product & Marketing

What's the best piece of advice that you have received?

Your career is a marathon not a sprint. This particular piece of advice was instrumental in enabling me to truly embrace and enjoy the precious time I had with my baby girl whilst I was on maternity leave. The time you take out to spend with your newborn child, or any family member, is special and can go by so quickly, you have a lifetime to develop your career.

What was your very first job?

I worked on the till at Coles when I was 15!

What's something that most people don't know about you?

Despite my continued efforts, I seem incapable of keeping my indoor plants alive!

If you weren't working in finance, what would you be doing?

Working on my own start up. Developing ideas, building and growing a new business from the ground up.
