Henderson's new hire heads home: Q&A with Tom Kelly

Based in the newly-opened office in his hometown of Brisbane, Tom Kelly tells Industry Moves he was drawn to his new role as a sales director with Henderson Global Investors as he was impressed by the firm's solid growth in Australia. He also tells us about his very first job, shares his advice on building relationships in the industry and offers his thoughts on the necessary attributes of a successful sales director.

Based in the newly-opened office in his hometown of Brisbane, Tom Kelly tells Industry Moves he was drawn to his new role as a sales director with Henderson Global Investors as he was impressed by the firm's solid growth in Australia. He also tells us about his very first job, shares his advice on building relationships in the industry and offers his thoughts on the necessary attributes of a successful sales director.

What motivated you to join Henderson Global Investors?

I was drawn to Henderson Global Investors for many reasons; in particular, I was impressed by the growth and achievements of the Australian business since establishing a presence in 2013. I was also attracted to the strong team-focused environment, broad product suite and a focus on pure funds management.

The firm has made a strong commitment to the Australian market and the opportunity to establish Henderson's Queensland presence was very attractive.

In your opinion, what are the main attributes that make for an effective sales director?

A deep understanding of investment markets, products and clients, combined with the ability to provide actionable insights.

What advice would you offer for building successful relationships in the industry?

Take the time to build trust, appreciate that your clients' time is precious, and always make decisions with a long-term view.

How has your previous experience prepared you for this role?

I have been fortunate to have had broad exposure to a range of investment styles, strategies and client types, enabling me to offer a different perspective to the investment opportunities and challenges clients face.

Who has had the biggest influence on your life/career so far?

Outside of work, my wife and daughters are a constant reminder of what's most important in life. Career-wise, early on I was taught that trust is all you have in this industry.

What was your very first job?

My first job was at a sporting goods store on the weekends, and my first job in the financial services industry was at a boutique corporate advisory firm

How do you maintain a work/life balance?

These days this is something everyone struggles with. The adage that 'balance is not something you find, it's something you create' proves you have to continuously work at it.

Where did you grow up?

I grew up in Brisbane, so it's great to return home.
