VicSuper has announced the appointment of Martin Vassallo as the $21 billion fund's chief risk officer (CRO).

In this newly-created role, Vassallo will lead the risk and compliance teams and oversee the "development and deployment" of risk and compliance frameworks, reporting and governance, the fund said.

Vassallo has over 30 years' experience in financial services, risk management, compliance and information security, having previously served as general manager, operational risk & compliance for NAB Business Banking. More recently, he was chief risk officer at Tandem Corp and the Asia Pacific chief risk officer for FIS Global.

VicSuper CEO, Michael Dundon, said: "The appointment of Martin is a strong and timely addition to the fund, particularly given the increasing importance of compliance and risk management across the industry."

He added: "We believe now is the right time to introduce a CRO to our executive team and I'm pleased we've secured a senior executive of Martin's calibre."

VicSuper has also announced the appointment of former Blue Sky Alternative Investments executive, Jo McKennariey, as the fund's executive manager, people experience.
