ING Bank has promoted its head of retail, Melanie Evans, to the top Australian job.

The organisation's current Australian CEO, Uday Sareen, has been named head of wholesale banking for ING Europe, Middle East, and Africa.

ING chair John Laker praised Evans' contributions to the organisation, noting that it has grown to be the nation's fifth-largest main financial institution, holding a 6% market share. "Melanie is a very experienced banker with a proven track record who will continue to drive ING's growth and diversification agenda.

"Her appointment is testament to all that Melanie has achieved for the retail bank and its customers."

Evans began her career in retail banking with St George Bank, later joining Westpac's equities business. She spent more than a decade with BT in a variety of leadership roles before returning to Westpac as chief of staff.

Outside of finance, Evans has been an independent director for Surf Life Saving Australia since 2014.

Said Evans of ner new role, "As ING's new CEO in Australia my focus will be to drive the bank's growth and diversification agenda. I will continue to prioritise our customers and team members.
