ING Australia CEO Uday Sareen has been promoted to head of wholesale banking for the group's operations in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa.

He's been replaced by Melanie Evans, who has been promoted from her current role as head of ING Australia's retail banking operations.

"Uday will be leaving a highly successful, customer-focused bank with an excellent workplace culture. ING is now one of Australia's most trusted brands," said ING Australia chair John Laker. "Uday was always ambitious in his agenda for Australia and he delivered the results. We congratulate Uday on his new appointment and wish him continued success."

During Sareen's leadership, more than one million customers joined ING bank, bringing the total to more than 2.7 million.

He first joined ING in India in 2007 and took the reins of Australian operations in 2016. "I've been proud to lead a bank that's ramped up the competitive spirit in both retail and wholesale banking, offering a real alternative for Australians," said Sareen. "While we are a leading digital bank it is the commitment of our people to our customers and each other that makes ING so special and what I will miss most."

Sareen will relocate to Europe for his new role.
