AIST appoints new Head of Advocacy
The Australian Institute of Superannuation Trustees (AIST) has appointed Melissa Birks as head of advocacy.
Birks, who has 19 years’ experience working in senior roles across the superannuation industry, was previously a senior specialist in the superannuation team at ASIC, providing technical analysis and strategic advice on consumer issues.
Birks commenced her career in superannuation at the ATO, before serving in stakeholder relations, strategy, marketing and communications roles with Link Group, HESTA and Hostplus.
In welcoming her to AIST, CEO Eva Scheerlinck said: “Melissa’s broad skillset and her deep understanding of policy and regulatory landscape will be critical in this time of increased regulatory and public scrutiny of superannuation."
Birks replaces Ailsa Goodwin, who has joined AIST-member fund Cbus as the fund’s strategic public policy advisor.
"Thrilled to be advocating on behalf of the sector": Q&A with AIST's Melissa Birks
A passionate believer in the profit-to-member model for super, Melissa Birks has joined AIST as its new head of advocacy. We ask Melissa about her particular areas of focus, and the role super funds can play in addressing issues of climate change and retirement incomes for women and indigenous Australians. She also shares a little of her childhood and what keeps her busy on the first Sunday of each month.
