Women in Super and AGSM @UNSW Business School yesterday announced their annual scholarship program for 2019 at the Women in Super NSW lunch, which featured Shemara Wikramanayake, Macquarie Group chief executive officer, as guest speaker.
Attendees had the opportunity to hear Wikramanayake give her first interview since taking over the top job at Macquarie in November. Former chair of NSW WIS, Sandi Orleow, posed the questions in front of a full house at Sydney’s Sofitel Wentworth hotel.
Said to be a ‘disjointed incrementalist’ by a former boss, Wikramanayake cited resilience and optimism as keys to her success, chocolate as her favourite food and her husband as instrumental to her being able to balance work and home due to his decision to be the stay-at-home dad in their children's early years. At a young age, she aspired to be either James Bond or an aeroplane pilot, but instead became Macquarie Group's first female CEO.
